Potsdam girls end Massena’s NAC lacrosse win streak

MASSENA - The Potsdam Central varsity girls lacrosse team brought a good Massena Central thing to an end on Thursday at Mike Nicholas Field.

“Our girls came out ready to play today. We haven’t beaten Massena in a couple of years, nobody has. They’re a strong team and one of our goals at the beginning of the season was to beat them and today we came up with one of best games to do it,” said coach Sarah Bullard after the Lady Sandstoners relayed a 6-3 halftime lead into a 10-5 NAC win over the Lady Raiders, who hadn’t loss to a Section 10 rival since the 2010 season.

“We did a good job of taking away their strengths on offense and just played as a unit the whole game,” she added.

With the win, Potsdam took over sole possession of the top spot in the NAC at 3-0 while sinking the Lady Raiders to 2-1.

“You can’t take anything away from Potsdam. They played great at both ends of the field,” noted Massena coach Jeffrey Slack after suffering his first regular season loss to an NAC rival. “We had no answer for their offense and we couldn’t seem to solve their defense. When things weren’t going the way we liked, we got impatient.”

“We didn’t come ready to play today and you can’t afford to do that against any team, especially one as good as Potsdam,” he added. “Hopefully, this will give us some added motivation for the rest of the season.”

Michaela Cole, a Parishville-Hopkinton Central product, led the way offensively for the Lady Sandstoners with four goals. Nettie Rishe generated three goals and one assist followed by Kalie Grant with two goals and Jenny Tardelli with one.

Dominique Valancius stepped up lead the Massena attack with three goals and an assist as the Lady Sandstoners held senior standout Erin Francis to a solo assist. Alisha Jacobs and Ashlyn Olson struck for the other goals while Carlie Leary chipped in an assist.

Katelyn Bloom turned aside six shots in the winning effort while Annalee Beckstead had five saves for Massena.

The Lady Sandstoners are slated to play a non-league game at General Brown on Saturday at 1 p.m. while the Lady Raiders will look to get back on track on Monday when they travel to Fort Covington to take on NAC rival Salmon River starting at 4:30 p.m.

In other varsity girls lacrosse games played on Thursday, OFA dropped a 21-4 non-league decision to Indian River and Salmon River was slated to play a non-league game at Northwood Prep in Lake Placid.
