Motorist arrested on DWI charge after driving wrong way on Interstate 81

A Westchester County man faces drunken-driving and other charges after he drove the wrong way for more than 15 miles on Interstate 81 on Wednesday afternoon, according to state police.

Kevin J. Starkey, 24, Katonah, was charged about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday with aggravated driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and several traffic violations after he was observed driving in the wrong direction between Pulaski and Ellisburg, state police said.

Shortly before 1 p.m., state police started receiving reports about a motorist driving north on the southbound side, near Exit 36 in Pulaski, and troopers finally were able to stop Mr. Starkey about an hour later, near the Ikeys Crossing overpass in the town of Ellisburg, they said. Several troopers responded to the calls. There were no accidents, police said.

Police later determined that Mr. Starkey’s blood alcohol content was 0.20 percent. A BAC of 0.08 percent is the threshold for DWI under state law. A motorist faces the more serious charge of aggravated DWI when the BAC is 0.18 percent or above.

He was arraigned in Ellisburg Town Court and later released from the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building after posting $1,000 bail.
