Emma M. Hazelton Whitaker


CHAMPION — Emma Mae Hazelton Whitaker, 98, passed away Thursday morning at her home on the Whittaker Road under the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Born in Hammond on September 6, 1914, the daughter of Fred & Laura Hazelton, she attended a one room schoolhouse in Hammond, where she finished eighth grade. She worked at local restaurants and did domestic work for summer residents on the St. Lawrence River.

She married Edgar Shove of Hammond in 1931. They had three children; Donna (Arnold) Conklin of Edwards, NY; Thelma “Patsy” (John) Brown of Carlisle, PA; and Rodney (Joanne) Shove, of Rossie, NY. They divorced in 1940.

Emma later married Ai Hutton, of Rossie, in 1951 and had her fourth child, Gordon (Lisa) Hutton, of Adams, NY. There were 5 stepchildren from this union. Mr. Hutton died in 1956.

She married Carlton Whitaker on October 26, 1957. Together they ran a successful dairy farm on the Whittaker Road in Champion. They were members of the Champion Grange, NYS Grange and members of the United Methodist Church in Champion. Emma was one of the founding members of the Champion Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Mr. Whittaker passed away in December 1995.

Emma enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, traveling, baking bread and pies and caring for her chickens and ducks. On nice days, Emma could be found mowing her lawn or enjoying time at her camp on Pleasant Lake.

In addition to her four children, she is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by two grandchildren, Mitchel Shove, Rossie and Brandie Rowsam, Black River.

A funeral service will be held at the Champion United Methodist Church on Sunday, April 21st at 2:00 PM. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, April 20th from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage.
