Claxton-Hepburn buys flower shop property

Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center has bought a neighboring property for $240,000 for unspecified expansion purposes.

The hospital’s acquisition is Farrand’s Flowers, located at 118 King St., a block away from the 214 King St. hospital.

Farrand’s is relocating to a 3,000-square-foot storefront building at 1021 Paterson St.

“Any time there is property that becomes available in the vicinity, we try to acquire it,” said Laura Shea, hospital spokeswoman.

There are no immediate or confirmed plans for the property, which sports parking and office space.

“That’s what we’re evaluating,” Mrs. Shea said Thursday. “Especially someplace that close.”

The hospital paid more than twice the 5,400-square-foot property’s $104,000 assessed value.

The hospital already owns a vacant building at the corner of Ford Avenue and King Street, next to the flower shop.

Farrand’s owner John C. Farrand is selling the business to Patricia Kelley, a 20-year store employee and owner of an Ogdensburg events planning business, PK Solutions.

Relocation in earnest, Mr. Farrand said Thursday, will begin in May.

“We’re actually moving right now,” he said.

Mrs. Kelley will keep the Farrand’s name for her new business, and Mr. Farrand will stay on as a consultant.

In February, Mrs. Kelley was approved by the Ogdensburg Growth Fund Development Corp. for a seven-year, $36,000 loan at 3.25 percent interest to help buy the store as well as assist in paying for relocation, renovations and inventory.

The new store will have no greenhouse, but will instead emphasize window and outdoor display space and an expanded gift shop.
