College hockey: SLU award winners announced


CANTON — Senior captain Kyle Flanagan was selected for three of the major awards as the Friends of St. Lawrence Hockey recently honored the 2012-13 men’s team.

Flanagan, currently playing in the American Hockey League for the Adirondack Phantoms who was chosen as a Hobey Baker Award finalist, as well as a first-team All-American, was named the Saints’ most valuable player and selected as winner of the school’s Bernie McKinnon Coaches Award and the Jinx Doyle Award.

Junior forward Greg Carey, a second-team All-American and a Hobey Baker finalist, was named the winner of St. Lawrence’s Brian McFarlane Award to recognize both hockey and academic accomplishments. Carey was the SLU winner of the ECAC-Scholar Athlete Award and is a dean’s list student.

Senior defenseman George Hughes, the third Saint to earn All-America honors, was named the winner of the Pete McGeough Award as the team’s outstanding defenseman. Junior forward Jeremy Wick was the winner of the team’s most improved player award.

Freshman forward Sean McGovern was selected as SLU’s rookie of the year, while senior Matt Dyer, who missed all of last season because of injury, was the winner of the Terry Slater Perseverance Award. Junior defenseman Justin Baker was named as the winner of the Friends’ Seventh Player Award named in honor of Dr. Jim Street.
