MASSENA - Twenty eight parents and their babies splashed into the record books last year at the Great Cloth Diaper Change, which was being hosted in Massena for the first time.

Event Coordinator Elizabeth R. Hobkirk said this year’s event will be slightly different, but the message will be the same.

Last year a world record was set for the most diapers being changed simultaneously with 8,251 diapers changed at 189 events in four different continents.

“Malaysia actually had a qualified event last year at 2 a.m., so I think that’s why they changed it,” she said. “That’s pretty impressive though that they were able to that many parents up at 2 a.m.”

While last year’s Great Cloth Diaper Change actually included 256 events in 15 countries, Mrs. Hobkirk explained that in order to set an official world-record there were certain parameters that had to be met with each site needing at least 25 qualified entrants to even count toward the final total.

As of right now, Mrs. Hobkirk said there are 285 sites registered in 17 different countries.

This year’s event though won’t include any late night or early morning events.

“We’ll be changing the diapers at 11 a.m. local time, so the change will roll around the world,” she said, reading information off of the Real Diaper Association’s website.

The purpose of the event, she said, is to promote the use of cloth diapers, something that’s not only better for the environment than throwing away garbage bags full of disposable diapers, but also better for the parent’s pocketbook.

And while Mrs. Hobkirk’s children are no longer wearing diapers, she recalled last year spending roughly $300 on diapers, not for a few month, but for the entire year.

“If you’re planning on having more than one child, they will last,” she said. “They’ll pay for themselves so even if you’re not interested in the environment and being green, that’s still an incentive.”

Participants in the event will receive a free entry into a drawing for a gift basket valued at more than $250. Non-participants and those interested in more than one entry can purchase additional entries for $1 each.

“Last year we had a lot of smaller prizes,” she said. “This year we put it all together into one big grand prize.”

Pre-registration is available online through the event’s Facebook page, which can be found by searching for Great Cloth Diaper Change Massena, though Ms. Hobkirk said pre-registration is not required.

Participants are encouraged to arrive early as the first 25 entrants will receive a free gift bag and the event will begin promptly at 11 a.m.
