TAUNY hosting quilting workshop on May 11

CANTON - Quilters of all levels, including beginners, can learn the art of improvisational piecing to create fun, freeform quilt blocks at TAUNY.

Quilter and experienced sewing arts instructor Alice David ( will teach the techniques of improvisational piecing, quilting, and finishing/binding from 9 a.m. to noon May 11.

During the class, at least one block will be made into a quilted “mug rug”—the perfect size for a cup of tea or coffee and a snack. Other 8” blocks could be used at home to make more mug rugs or other items such as decorative pockets on a tote bag , apron, journal cover, or pillow, or joined with others in a wall hanging. Improvisational piecing is a perfect “scrap-busting” project, so bring your scrap bag and have some creative fun! Participants need only basic sewing skills and should be able to sew a straight seam.

The cost is $25 for the three-hour class ($20 for TAUNY Friends), plus an $8 materials fee. Materials fee is waived if you bring your own fabric backing and batting (call or email TAUNY for detailed materials list). Everyone is welcome to bring fabric scraps to use or share in the time-honored scrap-trading tradition.

Pre-registration and payment are required by 3 p.m. May 10. Please call TAUNY at (315) 386-4289 or email Hannah at with any questions or to register.
