Author to speak on patriot War on May 13

Shaun J. McLaughlin, author of “The Patriot War Along the New York-Canada Border — Raiders and Rebels,” will speak to the Jefferson County Genealogical Society on May 13.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Ives Street Road.

Mr. Mclaughlin, a resident of Mississippi Mills, Ontario, maintains a blog on the Patriot War and also has self-published a Patriot War-based novel, “Counter Currents.” Information on both can be found at

The Patriot War, fought mainly in 1837 and 1838, occurred when hundreds of men on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border took up arms to free Canada from supposed British tyranny. They were up against British regulars and militia.

The war divided itself into two distinct parts, the movement in Lower Canada, mainly modern-day Quebec, and that of Upper Canada, mainly present-day southern Ontario.

“This is as much an American story as it is a Canadian story,” Mr. McLaughlin said last year in an interview with the Times.

Mr. McLaughlin plans to talk about famous American participants in the Patriot War, such as Daniel Heustis of Watertown and “pirate” Bill Johnston.

The talk is free and open to the public.
