GOUVERNEUR A Chemung County woman was arrested Sunday morning after she tried to smuggle 50 latex fingertips filled with drugs into the Gouverneur Correctional Facility, state police said.
Darcelle L. Tomlin, 26, Elmira, and her 6-year-old daughter went to the facility at 112 Scotch Settlement Road to visit an inmate, troopers said, when officers discovered that Ms. Tomlin was attempting to bring synthetic opiates inside.
Information about how she allegedly was transporting the contraband was not immediately available, state police said Tuesday, nor was the estimated street value of the drugs.
Ms. Tomlin was arrested at 8:25 a.m. and charged with four counts of first-degree introduction of dangerous goods into a prison, a class D felony; three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance: possessing a narcotic drug with intent to sell, a class B felony, and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.
Ms. Tomlins daughter was placed temporarily with an area foster family until arrangements could be made for her to be handed over to relatives, state police said.
Ms. Tomlin was committed to the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, in lieu of $20,000 bail, where she remained Tuesday.
Gouverneur Town Court officials said a preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Thursday morning.
