Ogdensburg’s waterfront redevelopment plan will depend heavily on public input as officials prepare for a pair of key meetings next month.

At last night’s city council meeting, Planning and Development Director Andrea L. Smith told the lawmakers about a pair back-to-back public meetings May 2 at the Dobisky Visitors Center, 100 Riverside Ave. A community open house from 3 to 5 p.m. will be followed by a community workshop from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Michael B. Taylor, president of the Connecticut-based Vita Nuova consulting firm, will be here for both meetings. Vita Nuova is advising a state Department of Environmental Conservation and Department of State-directed Brownfields Opportunity Area study that focuses on proposed residential and commercial development of a 330-acre section of St. Lawrence River shoreline between Park Street to the east and the former Diamond International site, Mansion Avenue, to the west.

City Manager John M. Pinkerton said that strong attendance and comments at both meetings are essential.

“They (Vita Nuova) know how to get stuff done,” he said. “But they need us to tell them what to do.”

In other business, the council voted 7-0 in favor of the police department spending $22,438 from its $32,000 forfeiture of criminal proceeds account to buy a 2013 Chevrolet Impala for use as an unmarked car. The budget for this year calls for two others to be purchased to replace aging vehicles. The three new vehicles will give the police department six unmarked cars, said Chief Richard J. Polniak Jr.

Voting in favor were Mayor William D. Nelson, Deputy Mayor Michael D. Morley and councilors R. Storm Cilley, Jennifer Stevenson, Wayne L. Ashley, William D. Hosmer and Daniel E. Skamperle.
