College softball: Potsdam, St. Lawrence split doubleheader


POTSDAM — SUNY Potsdam’s Megan Johnson outdueled St. Lawrence University’s Kyle Plimpton in the opener, and the St. Lawrence offense rebounded in the second game as the two teams split a nonleague softball doubleheader on Monday.

Johnson, formerly of Heuvelton, threw a five-hit shutout as Potsdam won the first game 3-0. She struck out two and walked one. Plimpton struck out 11 and allowed four hits. One of those hits was a two-run home run by Amanda Perry in the first inning. Molly McCuin added an RBI single for Potsdam.

In the second game, the Saints (15-12) scored seven runs in the first three innings, including five in the third, to beat Potsdam, 11-8. Leslie Stratton went 4-for-4 for St. Lawrence. Elizabeth McGinley drove in four runs on two hits. Caroline Kieltyka went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. For Potsdam (8-18), Perry went 4-for-4 and McCuin, Johnson and Katie Marsman all drove in two runs.
