FORGED INSTRUMENT - MASSENA - Village police charged Krystal L. Olson, 34, of 3 Ripley St., Massena, with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and petit larceny Monday afternoon.
Police said Olson went to Laneuvilles bottle redemption center and turned in 255 bottles and cans. She then altered the receipt to read 6,225 in an attempt to gain $300 additional cash for the fraudulent return.
Ricky Herne, in a statement he signed for police, said he counted 255 bottles for a woman at approximately 11:30 a.m. ... she was on the phone talking to someone and stated that he had to have stitches, and she would be right there. When I handed the lady her receipt, she ran out the door, the Laneuvilles employee noted.
He said he then explained the situation to a store clerk and told her he did not know when the woman would return to redeem her receipt for the 255 bottles. He said at approximately 2 p.m. his employer, Leonard Laneuville, asked him how many bottles the woman had turned in earlier in the day.
The lady standing with the police was the same lady I had counted 255 bottles for earlier in the morning. She did not have 6,255 bottles as her receipt showed, he added.
She was arraigned by Massena Town Justice Gerald P. Sharlow and released under the supervision of the probation department to return to village court on April 30.
