Public exercise stations going up soon in Ogdensburg

Two outdoor multi-exercise fitness stations, one for adults and the other for youths, could be set up next to each other in Ogdensburg’s Greenbelt as soon as the end of this week.

A concrete foundation was poured Tuesday for the station near the city’s Elsa Luksich Municipal Pool and its Maple City Trail. Parks and Recreation Director Matthew J. Curatolo said that, weather permitting, it will settle quickly enough to allow installation of the equipment by Friday or early next week.

The Parks and Recreation Department obtained the ENERGI/ENERGI Jr. outdoor stations through a $4,500 grant received by the St. Lawrence Health Initiative’s Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work and Play Project, a grant funded by the state Department of Health. The exercises possible at each station include pull-ups, chin-ups, knee tucks and squats.

City Councilor Jennifer Stevenson questioned the setup at Monday’s council meeting, asking why the adult station components couldn’t be separated and placed along the Maple City Trail. Mr. Curatolo said the grant requires, among other conditions, no possibility for vandalism.

The trail for now, he said, is too risky for what is essentially a pilot program.

“I didn’t think this was appropriate,” Mr. Curatolo said. “It could be in the future.”

Mr. Curatolo said that the Greenbelt was “a good location” because of its highly visible setting and access to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
