Potsdam fires back-to-back shutouts for sweep

POTSDAM — Megan Johnson and Ashley Thayer combined to allow SUNY Canton only three hits as SUNY Potsdam swept a nonconference doubleheader 3-0 and 8-0 Tuesday.

Johnson struck out seven in the opener, and Thayer gave up two hits in game two and struck out 10 in just five innings.

The Kangaroos (13-19 overall) made three errors in each game and only five of the runs scored by the Bears (10-18) were earned.

ST. LAWRENCE 2-0, ELMIRA 1-6

Chelsea Cavellier singled with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Natasha Bell from third base with the winning run in game one, helping the Saints split a nonconference doubleheader in Canton.

Bell went 2-for-4 for the Saints (16-13), while Elizabeth McGinley and Rebecca Allen each produced two hits.

Katie Dore went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs for Elmira (19-9) in the second game, and Julianne Heggie went 2-for-3.

BASEBALL

SUNY CANTON 6-8, SUNYIT 5-3

Greg Dobies doubled to score Chris Jones from first base with the winning run in the opening game as the Kangaroos (9-19) swept a nonconference doubleheader in Canton.

Tom Darling went 3-for-3 to lead SUNY Canton in game one while Michael Zelyez, Kyle Sacks and Dobies each finished with two hits. Gerardo Torres went 3-for-5 and drove in five runs in game two for the Kangaroos. Kevin Hill went 2-for-2 with three RBIs.

Jim Sass led SUNYIT (12-18) in the opener, going 3-for-3, and Chandler Eva went 3-for-4 in game two.

HAMILTON 10, ST. LAWRENCE 7

Joe Jenson went 4-for-5, and Gabe Klein, Zack Becker and Jared Friedberg each added three hits as the Continentals (13-18) defeated the Saints in a nonconference game in Canton.

Jeff Kott went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Saints (13-13). Bryan Palermo and Khifer O’Connor also produced two hits for SLU.

JEFFERSON CC 3-8, COLUMBIA-GREENE CC 1-3

Jake Welch hurled a complete game and struck out eight as the Cannoneers took game one en route to a Region 3 East Division doubleheader sweep of the Twins in Hudson.

Louie Diaz and Mike Mosher each went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the nightcap for Jefferson Community College, (18-12, 12-2), which has won six straight.

Kevin Gorman belted a pair of hits in game two for Columbia-Greene Community College (8-11).

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

SUNY CORTLAND 22, SUNY POTSDAM 3

Erica Geremia scored five goals to send SUNY Cortland past the Bears (4-9, 1-6) in a SUNYAC game in Potsdam.

Emma Hayes-Hurley tallied four goals, and Tara Monaghan, Gina Campese, Maria Di Fato and Liz Beville each scored two for the Red Dragons (14-1, 7-0).

Whitney Boshart, Emily Petit and Michelle Varney scored for SUNY Potsdam.
