Robert E. Queor, Norfolk, left, and Kevin P. Monroe, Norfolk, employees for Harvey Excavation & Construction Company, use jackhammers to remove the steps in front of the Potsdam Public Library, which have stood unchanged since 1934.

The original steps were cracked, uneven and steep are being demolished to make way for new, safer steps. Demolition began Monday and will continue through Thursday. Harvey Construction, Chase Mills, is overseeing the $36,875 project with half of the cost likely being covered by a state grant. The new stairs will be complete by mid-May. (Hunter Photo)
