YMCA family scavenger hunt is May 18

The Watertown Family YMCA will help families put a little spring into their step next month during the agency’s inaugural family scavenger hunt.

The event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. May 18 at Thompson Park to help families achieve fun and fitness, according to Michelle Graham, the Y’s senior director of health and wellness.

“Even though our runs are family-driven, this was something specific kids could be a vital component to,” she said. “This is parents and kids doing something together.”

Each clue will lead families to a physical or mental challenge. Upon completion of the task, they will be given a coin to save until the end of the hunt. Clues will be spread throughout the park, including some within the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park.

“You’re really working together as a team,” Mrs. Graham said. “Isn’t that what families do on a daily basis? You’re going to need your parents to support and help you through the challenge.”

Families could be made up of one child and one parent or family member, a group of cousins, one young son and a father, or a variety of other combinations. At least one child and one adult are needed in the mix, Mrs. Graham said.

After all tasks are completed, families will be entered to win a variety of prizes, including a one-year membership to the Y — valued at $670, a Best Buy gift card and a mini vacation. Many random prizes will be given out throughout the hunt.

Lunch will be provided following the activities.

Participants can preregister by calling the Y at 782-3100 or visiting the Downtown Y at 119 Washington St., the Fairgrounds Y at 585 Rand Drive or the Carthage Y at 250 State St., Carthage. People also can register from 7 to 8:30 a.m. the day of the event at Thompson Park.

Registration fees are $15 per family for nonmembers or $10 per family for members.

Event sponsors include WWNY-TV7, Watertown Daily Times, Watertown Dental Health Group, Jreck Subs and Watertown Savings Bank. Businesses or people still may become sponsors or donate items to be given away throughout the hunt by calling Mrs. Graham at the Y.

The Y also will host a free Healthy Kids Day carnival from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Fairgrounds Y gymnasium. There will be games, face painting, hula hooping and information from various vendors.

Healthy Kids Day is a Y initiative to improve the health and well-being of children.
