Schools and communities are preparing for campaigns as candidates for next months school board elections are making themselves known.
While most schools have already passed the deadline for potential candidates to register, Ogdensburg City School Board of Education hopefuls have until May 1 to drop off petitions (which can be found in the district office).
Only one seat is up in the district, and so far only board President Frederick P. Bean has declared his intention to run.
But other districts in the area have already got the field locked in.
In Lisbon, Tammy Amo has decided not to run again, leaving Nancy Addison to run unopposed for the single seat thats up for grabs.
There will be a one-horse race in Hammond also, where Bernard Martin is running unopposed in order to regain his seat.
Theres more activity going on in Heuvelton this year, where there are two seats available, a full five-year term and a two-year term. The two-year term is left over from Richard Moores five-year term, from which he resigned in December for personal reasons.
Three people are running for the two seats that are open in Heuvelton. Board Vice President Dr. John P. Jack Zeh is running for re-election and Michelle McGaw, who was appointed to fill Mr. Moores place, is also running.
Darcy Backus will be on the ticket as well.
Whoever picks up the most votes in the Heuvelton race will gain the five-year seat with the second-place winner taking up the two-year position.
Madrid-Waddington will see one contested race, with the seat currently held by Jeffrey Dominy being sought by Andrew A. Bracy and Jacqueline Brown.
Gerald Molnar is seeking re-election and will be running unopposed.
In Morristown, four people are running for three open seats on the board.
Larry Kring III will be running as his wife, Jane Kring, steps down this year. Mark Blanchard will also be running.
Current board member Mary Anne Bailey and Darrell Merkel, the vice president of the board, have also dropped of petitions in order to run for re-election.
Its a very interesting race, Mr. Merkel said. I think theyre all good people that Im running against.
School board elections will be held on May 21.
