Annual walk to benefit cystic fibrosis research will be May 18

Next month, hundreds of people gather in the city to honor loved ones affected by cystic fibrosis.

On May 18 the Central New York Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will once again host the Ogdensburg Great Strides Walk.

Organizer Nancy L. Rudiger said over 10 teams from Helena, Waddington, Potsdam, Canton, Brasher Falls, Massena and Harrisburg have already signed up to participate to walk in the 2.2 mile loop around the city, beginning at the Dobisky Visitors Center, 100 Riverside Ave. Organizers are still looking for teams to participate.

“It’s surprising to learn that a disease you hear so little about affects so many people,” Mrs. Rudiger, Ogdensburg, said Wednesday. “There is no limit to who can join or how many members are on a team. The more the merrier.”

Last year, the event raised close to $20,000 towards cystic fibrosis research. Of every dollar raised, 90 cents goes towards cystic fibrosis research.

“Any donation greatly improves the quality of live for people with cystic fibrosis,” Mrs. Rudiger said.

Great Strides is the foundation’s largest fundraising event in which thousands of participants come together each year to help find a cure for cystic fibrosis, an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of approximately 30,000 children and adults in the U.S.

“Previously, all the funding was going towards making the medications geared towards alleviating symptoms,” Mrs. Rudiger said. “Now a number of drugs are coming to trial to cure the gene.”

The walk begins at 11 a.m., but registration will begin at 10 a.m. Participants are encouraged to walk as little or as much as they want, Mrs. Rudiger said. Children will have an opportunity to participate in arts and crafts in the Dobisky Center while parents walk. Refreshments will be available before, during and afterward.
