New tuxedo and alteration store opens in the city

Rebecca’s Designs and Alterations has arrived in the city as a mixture of tuxedo rentals, alterations and a fashion studio.

The store, located at 30 Lafayette St., opened in early March and has been inundated with business since then, according to Rebecca J. Brooks, co-owner.

“I didn’t realize how busy it was going to be,” Mrs. Brooks said.

She and her husband, Timothy Brooks, have been in the design and alteration business on and off for roughly 20 years.

“I’ve been sewing since I was 12,” Mrs. Brooks said. “It’s just my niche in life.”

When they lived in Ohio, Mrs. Brooks said she was popular for her specially designed scrubs for area nurses.

Nurses would leave her store with holiday patterns, spider web cuffs and tie-die pants in order to spice up their hospital and nursing home uniforms.

Now that they’ve been in the Ogdensburg area for about eight years, Mr. and Mrs. Brooks decided to get back to what they love.

“We loved the area so we decided to strike up the business here,” Mr. Brooks said.

Currently the store has a wide range of tuxedos, prom dresses and wedding dresses available.

“We mainly do alterations and tuxedo rentals,” Mr. Brooks said.

But Mrs. Brooks also designs her own dresses, wedding veils and vests for clients with the help of Mr. Brooks. She said they plan on expanding into other areas as well.

On May 11, Mr. and Mrs. Brooks are planning a Mothers Day buffet at the Dobisky Visitors Center, 100 Riverside Ave., from 6 to 9 p.m. to formally introduce their business to the city.

The dinner will be free “while supplies last,” Mrs. Brooks said.

She added that the dinner is both a celebration of their new business and a way to say thank you to the people who have supported the shop so far. Rebecca’s Designs and Alterations is open noon to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and by appointment Friday and Saturday.
