To The Editor:

Thank you to the north country communities, families, and friends who supported our Great Strides Walk and Cystic Fibrosis research in the past.

Almost 100 percent of the of the research done to find a cure for cystic fibrosis is funded from individual fund raising and the annual Great Strides Walks across the country. Because of this individual support, a drug, Kalydeco was approved by the Food and Drug Administration last year and has made a big difference for people with the D551 mutation, which is about 5 percent of those with CF. This year two new drugs, VX809 and VX661, are in the trial stage. These new drugs offer great hope. Kalydeco, VX809B, and VX661 all are aimed at the underlying causes of CF, whereas current medications are aimed at reducing the symptoms.

For those wishing to walk in the Great Strides Walk or for more information, please visit the website: www.greatstrides.cff.org or call the Syracuse Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at 463-7965.
