SU lacrosse topples Notre Dame in Big City Classic

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Syracuse University men’s lacrosse team made a big splash in the big city on Saturday night.

The Orange broke open a close game by scoring six successive goals in the fourth quarter to knock off top-ranked Notre Dame, 10-4, in the Big City Classic at MetLife Stadium to clinch a share of the Big East regular-season title for the third time in four years.

With the victory, ninth-ranked Syracuse (11-3, 5-1) finished in a tie for first with Villanova, but will be the No. 2 seed in the Big East Tournament based on a tiebreaker.

Dylan Donohue totaled a career-high four points, including three goals, with each point coming in the decisive 6-0 run for the Orange, which also denied Notre Dame (10-3, 4-2) a chance at securing its second consecutive Big East regular-season title.

After the Fighting Irish led 3-1 at halftime, Syracuse opened the third quarter with a 3-0 run in the first 4 minutes, 31 seconds to take a 4-3 advantage.

With the score tied 4-4 heading into the fourth quarter, Kevin Rice put the Orange up for good with a man-up goal by firing the ball just under the crossbar 26 seconds into the period.

Donohue followed by scoring three consecutive goals in the outburst, including two tallies within a span of a minute, to provide Syracuse with an 8-4 lead.

After Donohue finished off a pass from Cometti with 12:24 left, he converted on Rice’s pass from behind the net with 11:23 remaining to help spark the run, and later he scored with 4:43 left. Hakeem Lecky and Scott Loy also scored in the six-goal surge.

Rice finished with four points, including tying a career high with three assists, for Syracuse.

Goaltender Dominic Lamolinara registered six saves for the Orange.

Syracuse outshot Notre Dame, 32-24, and finished with a 29-19 advantage in ground balls, 29-19.

The Orange will meet the Fighting Irish again in a Big East Tournament semifinal at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Villanova. The championship game is slated for a noon start on Saturday at the same site.
