Searchers still unable to locate missing man in Black River

Searchers on Sunday still were unable to locate a man feared dead after jumping into the Black River on Saturday evening in an unsuccessful attempt to save a young boy with whom he had been fishing.

The search for the 47-year-old man continued Sunday morning with Watertown police and firefighters combing the shoreline and divers from Jefferson County’s Special Tactics and Rescue team again entering the water at the Glen Park hydroelectric dam, according to a Watertown Police Department news release distributed early Sunday afternoon.

“The dive ended with negative results,” the release stated, noting the STAR team was assisted by Watertown and Glen Park firefighters and personnel at the hydroelectric facility.

The body of the boy, 5, was recovered Saturday night at the racks of the dam.

Periodic shore searches for the man will be conducted, the release states, and anyone with any information is asked to call the Watertown Police Department at 782-2233.

Police on Sunday continued to withhold the names of the victims, with no specific rationale given.

The release did note that the man was a friend of the child’s family.

The incident occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. Saturday as the two were fishing off the 500 block of West Main Street, opposite Maggie’s on the River restaurant, 500 Newell St., police said.

Witnesses quickly reported it to dispatchers, and emergency officials initiated a search.

According to the release, the boy was carried in the current to Glen Park within about a half-hour, not an hour as previously reported.
