U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., will visit Samaritan Medical Center at 3 p.m. today to discuss federal matters at state hospitals.

Earlier this month, Mr. Schumer said during a Senate Finance Committee hearing that resolution of a 2011 misclassification of the hospital’s medical residency program is a top priority. The hearing dealt with the nomination of Marilyn Tavenner as administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The misclassification, an error by the Medicare and Medicaid centers, has resulted in the loss of $250,000 in Medicare reimbursement. Samaritan was misclassified as not rural, and therefore lost Medicare reimbursement for more than three residency slots. Since the misclassification two years ago, Samaritan has had to cover the reimbursement loss.
