LISBON – The town beach and campground is opening today in advance of walleye and northern pike fishing season, which begins Saturday.
Campground Director Michael J. ONeil is expecting a good year, weather permitting, thanks to recently added campsites and the Bass Anglers Sportsmans Society Bassmaster Elite Series coming to Waddington Aug. 8 to 11.
Mr. ONeil has already begun booking sites for the August competition.
The campground has also begun filling up with seasonal reservations, Mr. ONeil said, with 58 campers so far planning on staying a month or longer.
The recent $173,000 campground expansion increased the number of campsites from 75 to 91. Of the new sites, 11 are for motorhomes and recreational vehicles, and the other five accommodate tents, Mr. ONeil said. Upgrades were also made to 32 existing sites.
The last month has been spent on lawn maintenance and general repairs in anticipation of the camping season, Mr. ONeil said. Areas which were torn up during last years expansion project have been reseeded for grass as well.
Mr. ONeil said his vision for the campground is not yet complete.
My big push [for the summer] is to put the Internet in, he said.
Hes also hoping to add another road that gives access to the boat launch without forcing boaters to drive through the campground.
Its a big safety issue, Mr. ONeil said.
The Town Council will consider the prospect of a new road to the boat launch at its May 8 meeting.
The beach and campground is open until Oct. 1.
