Retirements recalls north country ties

The occasion of John B. Johnson Jr.’s retirement prompts me to write this letter. I am 85 years old. I have been retired near Myrtle Beach, S.C., for 22 years. I graduated from Clarkson University in 1951, and I worked at Alcoa in Massena for 14 years. Three of my children were born in Massena, and my son is retiring next month from the New York Power Authority in Massena where he is general maintenance superintendent.

While at Clarkson, I was president of the Athletic News Service and wrote most of the news releases and game stories for hockey, football, basketball and baseball. My contact, of course, was Jack Case. So you see, I have close ties to the north country.

Another reason for writing relates to journalism. My grandfather, Edward A. Ackley, was the editor of the two newspapers (we used to call them “house organs”) for Sheffield Farms from 1910 until he retired in 1942. I remember him telling me that one of the most respected editors he knew was Mr. Johnson of the Watertown Daily Times. I suspect that would be the retiring Mr. Johnson’s grandfather. I’m glad to see the company has stayed in the family.

My first stop every day on the Internet is the Watertown Daily Times’s website.
