JCC baseball splits twin bill with Herkimer County CC

HERKIMER — Jefferson Community College split a doubleheader with host Herkimer CCC on Tuesday in a matchup of the top two junior college baseball teams in Region 3 Division III East Division.

Jacob Welch pitched a complete game in the opener as the Cannoneers (23-14 overall, 17-5 division) won, 6-3. Nick Espino and Jordan Parker each finished with two hits and three RBIs for JCC, while Erric Bariner also had two hits.

Herkimer CCC (20-11, 19-3) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game to earn a 1-0 victory. Joe Kizia hurled the shutout for the Magicians and Brandon Overtreet singled in the winning run.

Mitchell Dubois was the hard-luck loser for JCC, allowing just four hits.

The two teams meet again in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.

SUNY PLATTSBURGH 8, SUNY CANTON 0

Brian Burns walked eight batters but somehow managed to throw a shutout, leading SUNY Plattsburgh over SUNY Canton in a nonconference game at Plattsburgh.

Burns gave up just two hits to the Kangaroos (12-22 overall).

Luke Weaver went 3-for-5 for the Cardinals (14-23), and Shane Houppert hit a three-run homer.

SOFTBALL

JEFFERSON CC 17-8, CLINTON CC 3-1

Paige Morgia belted two home runs, driving in three runs, to help Jefferson CC win the second game of a Region 3 doubleheader with Clinton CC (0-16) at Plattsburgh.

In the first game, Morgia contributed a triple and three RBIs, and Jessica Dobson-Tufo finished 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs for JCC (11-15).

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Broome CC 15, Jefferson CC 11

Jerine Klingberg and Kelcie Marshall each scored four goals as the Hornets (4-5) beat the Cannoneers in a Mid-State Athletic Conference game in Binghamton.

JCC (8-3) was led by Erica Gardner’s four goals and Allison Brady’s two goals and four assists.
