NORFOLK - The Norwood-Norfolk varsity softball team continued its bid for the NAC North Division lead by avenging a season-opening loss to Colton-Pierrepont with an 11-0 decision at home on Wednesday.
Senior Katie Ames went the distance for the win, striking out five and walking two in crafting a two-hit shutout as the Lady Flyers improved to 6-1 in the division adn 8-1 overall. Sabrina Johnson (3K, 2BB, 13H) pitched a complete game in taking the loss.
Aleah Palmer led a balanced offense going 3-4 with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored as the Lady Flyers pushed across a solo run in the second, two in the third, four in the fourth then four in the sixth. Carlea Weaver was 2-4 with a two-run double and two runs scored. Kirsten Barkley (2 runs scored, RBI), Mickey Frego (2 runs scored) and Cortney Harvey (run scored) all went 2-4 as well.
Morgan Doyle singled in the first and Eve Whalen connected for a hit in the fourth to account for the two C-P safeties.
In other softball matchups on Wednesday, St. Lawrence Central kept pace in the North Division with N-N by gaining a sweep at home over Chateaugay 4-0, 17-3 and Madrid-Waddington took two from Tupper Lake by scores of 13-4 and 13-0.
SLC 4-17, Chateaugay 0-3: In game one, Lindsey Thayer struck out 16 in a one-hitter where the Larries scored four runs in the fourth inning off Courtney Bouyea who struck out three and allowed seven hits.
Brandi Thomas (run scored, RBI), Thayer (run scored), Haleigh Agans (2 RBIs), Chelsea Savage (RBI), Liz Lynch, Morgan Villnave (run scored) and Breanna Vatter all singled for SLC which raised its North Division record to 7-1 with the sweep.
Felica Niles singled in the second for the lone Chateaugay hit.
In the nightcap, the Lady Larries collected 11 hits to exploit 15 walks as Kelsey Newtown struck out 10 in a five-hitter. Chelsea Savage went 3-4 and drove in three runs and Agans went 2-3 to drive in three runs to lead the winning offense.
Noelle Rufa (2 runs), Morgan Ramsdell (2 RBIs), Thomas (1 run), Tera Douglas (run, 2 RBIs) and Vatter all singled and Thayer scored four runs.
Hannah Cook belted an RBI triple in Chateaugays three-run fifth inning.while singles came off the bats of Young, Boyea, Abby Barnes, Katie Secore and Danielle Cook.
M-W 13-13, Tupper Lake 4-0: Blair Cryderman tossed a five inning, no-hitter in the second game where she fanned three and walked none in the nightcap over Tupper Lake on Wednesday after tossing a two hitter with two strikeouts and one walk in the opening-game win.
In game one, M-W scored nine times in the first as Bridget Beldock went 2-4 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Desiree Pryce (2-3), Mariah Patenaude (1-1, double, 2rs), Taylor Marcellus (2-3, 2 RBI), and Emily Murphy (1-2) rounded out the Jacket effort. Brook Gaginer (RBI), Malory McLear (RBI) and Amanda Lutten (RBI) all singled for Tupper as McLear allowed five walks in the setback.
In game two, Patenaude finished 2-4 with a triple and a double and two RBI and Beldock went 1-2 wuith a double, RBI and three runs scored backing up Cryderman who went 1-2. Marcellus finished 1-4 while Alison Fobare(1-3), Murphy (2-3), Pryce (1-2 double) rounded ou the attack as M-W plated five runs in the fifth to seal the win.
Zurek took the loss allowing nine hits.
