To The Editor:
My name is Judith Hinman, and I am a candidate for the Potsdam Central School District Board of Education.
Unlike any time in the past, the education system in our state has been the victim of a perfect storm of barbaric funding cuts coupled at the same time with historic mandates in the name of reform. In the end, our children are seeing higher class sizes, fewer course offerings, more unneeded tests, and less actual teaching time.
Our north country schools have been forced to cut programs, lay off teachers and staff, and dip into rainy day savings accounts just to keep the doors open.
I have been a pre-school special education teacher for nine years and have two children in the district and have seen firsthand the dramatic changes that our schools have endured.
As a graduate of the Potsdam School District and a lifelong community member, I feel the time is right to get off the sidelines and become an active player in our school district.
I salute our current and past boards for making Potsdam a destination school for families that want the best education for their children and hope to contribute to keeping that a reality.
On May 21, I ask that everyone goes to the polls and supports our children by voting for our school budget and to give me the opportunity to take a seat on the Board of Education.
Thank you for your support.
