SUNY Canton 5K Challenge



CANTON - SUNY Canton will be holding its third annual 5K Run/Walk Challenge at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 9.

The College invites members of the community to take part in the event, which will be held at the campus’ Edson A. Martin Athletic fields adjacent to the Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center (CARC), nicknamed Roos House.

The event is free, and the first 25 entries will receive a t-shirt. Preregistration can be found online at http://www.canton.edu/challenge/.

SUNY Canton offers a variety of career-driven bachelor’s degrees in addition to its associate and certificate programs. In the past year, the College added two new bachelor’s degrees and expanded its facilities with a new athletic center, nicknamed Roos House, and the Grasse River Suites Residence Hall. The College’s faculty members are noted for their professional real-world experience in addition to their academic credentials. SUNY Canton OnLine offers flexible and convenient online courses and programs. The College’s 14 athletic teams compete as provisional members of the NCAA Division III as well as the USCAA.



PCS Hall of Fame Nominations



POTSDAM - The Potsdam Central School Athletic Hall of Fame has begun accepting nominations for the Class of 2013.

The deadline for nominations is May 1, 2013. Inductees into the Hall of Fame may include individuals, teams or coaches who have made significant contributions to the Potsdam Central School Athletic Programs and exemplify the ideals of good citizenship.

Nominations for individual athletes or teams will only be considered for those that played at least ten years ago.

Coaches will become eligible for nomination five years after completion of their coaching career at Potsdam Central School.

Nomination form is available from the Potsdam Central School website on the Hall of Fame link or from Sarah Fiacco stonerbear84@hotmail.com. Check the Hall of Fame link for a list of all past inductees.

SLRWA Opening Day Derby Set



WADDINGTON - The St. Lawrence River Walleye Association presents its annual Opening Day Derby on Saturday from 6 a.m.-2 p.m. at the boat launch at Whitaker Park in Waddington with the scales opening at noon.

The entry fee is $50 per 2-person team with an optional $20 per team big fish contest. There will also be a $5 restocking fee for non SLRWA members. The new format for this year will be (3) fish 18”-23” and (1) fish over 23”.

All fish over 23” must be able to be released. Any dead fish will receive an 8-ounce penalty. Any fish between 18” and 23” can be kept by the fishermen and do not need to be released.

We are also announcing new boundaries. This year our boundaries are from the Prescott International Bridge to the top side of the Robert Moses Power Dam.

The awards ceremony will be held at the JC River Run Bar & Grill at 3 p.m. Sign-up location is at the JC River Run Bar & Grill on Friday, May 3, from 6-7:30 p.m.

Piker Open Golf Tournament



BRASHER FALLS - The Piker Open (in memory of Al Pike) to benefit Brasher Falls Youth Basketball is slated for Saturday, May 11, at Highland Greens Golf Club in Brushton.

The tournament features a 4-Person Scramble format and will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

The cost of $60 per person includes for golf, cart, lunch and donation to BFYB

Massena KofC Men’s Golf League



MASSENA - Knights of Columbus Council 1141 is sponsoring a men’s golf league at the Meadowbrook Golf Course in Winthrop.

The league will be holding an organizational meeting on Monday at the KofC Hall on East Orvis Street in Massena starting at 6 p.m.

Anyone interested in joining the league should attend the meeting or contact a league member.



Girls Hockey Tryouts Canceled



CANTON - Tryouts for a New York State bound Tier II U14 Girls hockey team slated to compete for the 2013-14 season and based out of Canton have been canceled.

The tryouts were scheduled for this weekend at the St. Lawrence Centre Mall Arena in Massena.

Norfolk Rovers Seeking Players



NORFOLK - The Norfolk American Legion Post 925 Rovers baseball team is seeking players for the upcoming season.

The team is open to players ages 19-under.
