To The Editor:

Each year at NNCS an Earth Day committee joins together and plans an eventful assembly for the students in Elementary School. This year’s committee consisted of 8 faculty members; Mrs. Yandoh, Mrs. Haseneaur, Mrs. Brothers, Mrs. Barrett, Mrs. Harvey, Mrs. Hamilton, Mrs. Adams and Mr. Butler. The theme this year was… Reduce, Reuse, And Recycle.

During the Earth Day assembly, the students were entertained by Shriners and their clown bicycles, the group sang songs, participated in hands on events, answered questions and won prizes, donated by the PTSA.

Mr. Butler organized our pull tab collection this school year - Students in K - 4th grade collected just under 80 pounds, which is approximately $680.00. Mr. Harold Brothers, Mr. Bob Squires, Mr. Jim Boyce, Mr. Phil McDonald and Mr. Mark Decar entertained the children by riding their homemade clown bicycles – which they are so well known for. Mrs. Regan’s class received a certificate from the organization for collecting the most pull tabs. With an amazing 104 containers of pull tabs; that is 7 garbage bags or 140 pounds. Mr. Brothers thanked the children and explained to them why this event is so extremely beneficial to the Shriners… the proceeds are donated to local children’s hospitals. More schools are encouraged to join the Shriners and help with this worthy cause.

Ms. Ashley Tranello; also joined us for our ceremony and educated the group with a power-point and a hands on recycling activity. Ashley is a senior at SUNY Potsdam who is majoring in community health.

The celebration concluded with a sing a long, led by Mrs. Harvey (NNES music teacher).

The students enjoyed a delicious ice-cream sandwich at the end of the day that was donated by the Norwood Norfolk Teachers Association.

Any questions regarding the Shriners foundation or inquiries regarding how to become a pull tab organizer please contact Mr. Harold Brothers at (315) 769-3922.
