The state Department of Environmental Conservation will require public owners of sewer systems to report all discharges to the department within two hours, according to new regulations that went into effect Wednesday.

Previously, notification of a discharge by publicly owned treatment works was required to DEC and the state Department of Health within two hours only if the discharge was near a public drinking water intake, a bathing beach or shellfish beds.

All untreated or partially treated sewage discharges from publicly owned treatment works were required to be reported to DEC within 24 hours.

According to a DEC press release, the department is working on regulations that would require publicly owned treatment works and publicly owned sewer systems to notify the public directly of discharges.
