TROY — The St. Lawrence University women’s lacrosse team held off a second-half rally by William Smith to claim a 12-11 victory in a Liberty League semifinal Friday at Rensselaer.

SLU (12-5 overall) will meet Rensselaer in the championship game at 3 p.m. today.

The Saints led 8-3 at halftime but William Smith (10-7) cut the deficit to one goal with an 8-4 run in the second half.

Brigid Hurley led SLU with three goals, and Stephanie O’Rourke and Mackenzie Collins each scored two.

Carly VanTassel recorded one goal and one assist, and Joey Kelly, Holly Noyes, Hannah Calvelli and Michaela Maybee tallied singled goals.

Kathleen Ragan led the Herons with four goals and two assists. Katie Sipple scored two goals and assisted on three, and Marissa Porter produced two goals for William Smith.

SOFTBALL

RENSSELAER 1, ST. LAWRENCE 0

Kristina Weltzin drove in Dani Grage with a sacrifice fly in the third inning to lift the Engineers (24-14) past the Saints in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament in Rochester.

SLU (21-16) will face Union at 10 a.m. today in an elimination game. If the Saints win, they’ll play the loser of Rochester/Rensselaer in another elimination game at 3 p.m.

Kristina Weltzin struck out eight for RPI, and Kyle Plimpton struck out six for the Saints.

TRACK AND FIELD

MARTEL LONE WINNER FOR SAINTS

Sophomore Josh Martel won the men’s javelin on the opening day of the New York State Collegiate Track Conference championship meet at SLU.

SLU’s men’s team is in fifth place after the first day with 28 points. RIT leads the men’s competition with 65 1/2 points and Ithaca is second with 56 1/2.

Ithaca College leads the women’s event with 93 1/2 points and RPI is second with 34. SLU’s women are in fourth with 23 1/2 points.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

ST. LAWRENCE 6, RIT 0

Elkie Vandenbeemt, Shannon Murphy and Elizabeth Geer were all part of winning doubles teams and won singles matches to help the Saints beat the Tigers (1-8) in a Liberty League quarterfinal in Rochester.

SLU (9-5) will face Vassar in a semifinal match at 2 p.m. today

RIDING

SAINTS LEAD NATIONALS

St. Lawrence holds a 22-15 lead over Skidmore with two events left at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association championship event in Harrisburg, Pa.

Katherine Figueroa won the team competition in novice on the flat for the Saints and Alyssa Bokor was first in intermediate on the flat to score 14 of SLU’s 22 points.
