Watertown teen charged with criminally negligent homicide

A 19-year-old Watertown man has been charged with criminally negligent homicide for his alleged role in an accident in September in the town of Ellisburg that killed another teen.

George W. Knapp also was charged with reckless driving and speeding following the investigation into the single-car accident Sept. 1 on Route 289 that killed Trevor D. Robinson, 17, Adams. Mr. Robinson, who was a passenger in the 2000 Corvette, died instantly.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Detective David J. Pustizzi Jr. said Thursday morning the accident occurred after Mr. Knapp’s car had, at one point, reached a speed of more than 140 mph.

“Speed was definitely a factor,” Sheriff John P. Burns said.

The crash occurred at the crest of a hill on Route 289 where the car became airborne and hit an embankment and trees, ending up in a field, Detective Pustizzi said. The vehicle rolled over several times.

Mr. Knapp, who suffered multiple injuries, was hospitalized at Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, for several weeks and then received home health care. It took investigators several months to reconstruct the accident, Detective Pustizzi said.

Mr. Knapp was arraigned Tuesday in Ellisburg Town Court and released on his recognizance pending grand jury action.
