One of the biggest country record sellers of all time has been selected as the replacement for the George Jones concert as part of the DPAO/Toyota/Car Freshner Summer Concert Series.

Randy Travis will perform at 7 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds Arena, replacing Mr. Jones, who died April 26. Mr. Jones had been scheduled to perform here Aug. 3.

For those with tickets to the George Jones concert, those tickets will be honored for the Randy Travis show. DPAO officials said there is no need to call the agency about the switch. Concert-goers can simply present their George Jones or Randy Travis ticket the night of the show.

For those people holding George Jones tickets who do not want to attend Mr. Travis’s show, call the DPAO at 782-0044 for instructions on how to receive a full refund. The deadline to receive a refund for the George Jones concert is May 17.

Tickets for the Randy Travis concert will go on sale when all refunds have been issued from the George Jones concert.

Mr. Travis is no stranger to the north country. He performed at the DPAO Summer Concert Series in 2004 and 1988.

Mr. Travis has earned seven Grammy Awards, 10 Academy of Country Music statuettes, 10 American Music Awards, two People’s Choice Awards, seven Music City News Awards, eight Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association and five Country Music Association honors.

To date, he has 18 No. 1 singles, 29 top-10 smashes and more than 40 appearances in feature films and television shows.

His latest album is a “25th Anniversary Celebration” with such members of the Country Music Hall of Fame as Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, the late George Jones, Ray Price and other musicians joining him.

On his website, Mr. Travis notes the passing of Mr. Jones. “I am very thankful I got to know George,” he wrote. “He’s one of the greatest singers that ever lived. I actually loved the man and really enjoyed the time I got to spend with him and Nancy.” Nancy was Mr. Jones’s fourth wife.

The Summer Concert Series begins May 25 with “Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild” program. It’s followed by Rodney Atkins on June 23, Mr. Travis on Aug. 3 and KC & the Sunshine Band with the Village People on Aug. 9. All concerts are at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds Arena

For more information or to reserve season tickets, call DPAO at 782-0044 or visit its website at www.dpao.org.

General admission tickets also will be available at most Kinney Drugs store locations and Price Chopper supermarkets.

Proceeds from the series benefit programs and services that DPAO provides to more than 500 developmentally disabled children, adults and their families in Jefferson and Lewis counties.
