Survivor of crash near Ogdensburg remains in critical condition

OGDENSBURG — One of the survivors of Friday’s fatal car accident on Route 37 just outside of the city has been released from a hospital and the other remains in critical condition in Upstate Medical University, Syracuse.

Hilmar M. Juell, 33, Hammond, was driving a Dodge Caravan south on Route 37 near the Stonefence Resort and Motel about 10 a.m. when his car was struck head-on by a Chevrolet Cruze heading in the opposite direction.

The nature of his injuries and the hospital where he was treated could not be confirmed. There was no one else riding in the Caravan.

Susan J. Wagoner, 52, Chaumont, a passenger in the Cruze, was in critical condition Monday at Upstate Medical University, state police Investigator Christopher M. Nye said.

The Cruze, driven by Albert Robinson Sr., 62, suddenly swerved into the other lane, hitting the Caravan. Mr. Robinson and his wife, Georgia Robinson, 58, both of Brownville, and Kristine K. Fitchette Bell, 51, of Dexter, died of massive trauma. Ms. Bell and Ms. Wagoner were sisters.

Mr. Robinson “did have health issues,” Mr. Nye said, though he didn’t want to speculate on the exact cause of the accident. “I don’t know if we’ll ever know.”

St. Lawrence County Coroner Russell B. Lawrence III said an autopsy on Mr. Robinson, conducted by forensic pathologist Dr. Samuel A. Livingstone, indicated that he may have suffered from cardiac arrhythmia, a condition that causes abnormal heart rhythms.

Ms. Wagoner and Ms. Bell were “close friends” of the Robinsons, Mr. Nye said.
