The Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad has finally relocated to larger accommodations.

The squad completed its move from 101 State St. to the former Hackett Hardware building, 1223 Pickering St., over the weekend.

“We moved little by little over the past five days and on Sunday at 2:45 p.m. we went into service,” Director of Operations Kenneth J. Gardner said Monday.

The squad is occupying 22,000 square feet over two floors of the 58,000-square-foot former retail building that it owns. With multiple rooms and offices as well as a seven-bay garage for its fleet of emergency vehicles, it is what squad officials have sought for years.

“This is exactly the way that we planned it,” Mr. Gardner said, his own desk and office floor strewn with loose papers and unpacked bags and boxes. “We’re very excited to be here.”

The first floor off the garage bays includes Mr. Gardner’s office, a lounge with kitchen, a computer center for records-keeping and calls, a conference room and a large community room for public use, including meetings.

The second floor has seven double-occupancy bedrooms, bathrooms with showers, a laundry room and a training room.

There is, according to Mr. Gardner, plenty of room to expand.

The much smaller building at 101 State St., which the squad rented for 30 years from the Ogdensburg Housing Authority, never did.

“We outgrew that building 15 years ago,” Mr. Gardner said.

The squad will hold a public open house on May 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The squad’s non-emergency telephone number remains 393-0837.
