College women’s athletics: Monroe named Empire 8 Softball Player of the Year


UTICA — Utica junior Chelsea Monroe, a 2010 General Brown graduate, was named the Empire 8 Conference Softball Player of the Year on Monday.

Monroe, who helped lead the Pioneers to a program-record 33 wins and their initial NCAA Division III Tournament bid, hit for a .372 average with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs in 43 games.

Monroe was also named to the all-conference first team as an outfielder. Her sister, Abby, who graduated from General Brown last June, was chosen as the second-team pitcher.

n St. John Fisher junior Taylor Hughes, a 2011 Watertown High School grad, led the St. John Fisher women’s lacrosse team to its second straight Empire 8 Conference title with an 11-8 win over Ithaca on Sunday. The Cardinals’ 15 wins is tied for the highest total in program history. Hughes leads the team with 82 points on 50 goals and 32 assists.
