Ahlfeld says he would have supported village board raise, Carvel to donate his to charity

MASSENA - While he was not present at last month’s meeting when the village board adopted it’s budget, which included $2,000 per year raises for board members, village Trustee Timothy J. Ahlfeld said Tuesday night he would have supported the increase.

“Absolutely,” he said, declining to elaborate on why.

“I have no other comment other than I would support it,” he said.

Now that the budget has been adopted and trustees will see their 2013-14 salaries increase by 50 percent up to $6,000, the two trustees who voted against the raises had differing views of what they’ll be doing with the extra money.

Trustee Francis J. Carvel said while the raise is a done deal, he’s not planning on personally benefitting from the additional money.

“I’m thinking of giving most of it away,” he said. “I haven’t decided where yet, but I’ll give it away to some non-profit or something.”

When asked if she would accept the raise, Trustee Patricia K. Wilson said she would, noting she wasn’t opposed to any raise, she was just opposed to a 50 percent raise.

“I suggested, if we could get a unanimous vote, we should take $1,000 instead of $2,000,” she said.

The budget, which was adopted by a 3-1 vote, with Mr. Carvel voting in opposition and Mr. Ahlfeld not present also calls for Mayor James F. Hidy to receive a salary increase of $5,000 or $41.7 percent from $12,000 to $17,000.

Those who supported the raises pointed out that in 2010, trustees took a $1,000 pay cut that saw their salaries drop from $5,000 to $4,000. Then-Mayor Randy G. DeLosh saw his salary drop $3,000 from $15,000 to $12,000.
