Heuvelton native will be featured on Wheel of Fortune

Jennifer L. Adams is leaving her fate up to the turn of a wheel.

The 1997 graduate of Heuvelton Central School will be on Monday’s Wheel of Fortune game show.

“Utter elation,” is how she describes the moment she found out she was going to be a contestant with her friend, Adam Hildebrand, Cincinnati, Ohio, on the long-running game show’s Best Friends Week.

She said as soon as Mr. Hildebrand asked her to compete with him, she was on board.

“There was no hesitation,” she said.

She has asked her relatives in Heuvelton to record the show for her. She wouldn’t give away how she had performed, though, so as not to spoil the surprise.

A fan of the show, Ms. Adams said the experience was a lot of fun. Her competition was filmed on March 18.

“I was a bundle of nerves,” she said about the day the show was filmed, though she said she would do it again given the chance. “We bolted after it was done. We both needed a Manhattan.”

Ms. Adams said she and Mr. Hildebrand trained for weeks in advance of the filming.

“I was coming home every single night and watching Wheel of Fortune,” she said.

She said she and Mr. Hildebrand would exchange tips and critiques of other competitors they watched on the show.

“We would analyze what people were doing wrong, what people were doing right,” Ms. Adams said. “We’re pretty cold and calculating.”

She also read up on the frequency of letters in the English vocabulary in order to give her a leg up on predicting the probability of each blank space.

“I’m a little bit of a word nerd,” she said.

And other friends helped out as well, throwing Ms. Adams and Mr. Hildebrand a pizza and wine party with a Wheel of Fortune theme in advance of the show, as well as helping them celebrate after the filming.

Ms. Adams, daughter of Mary Ellen and David Adams, Heuvelton, is also a heavy reader, she said.

A 2001 graduate of Princeton University, Ms. Adams is currently the senior marketing manager at the Practising Law Institute in New York. She is a free-lance writer on the side.

Monday’s episode featuring Ms. Adams starts at 7:30 p.m. on CBS.
