The city of Ogdensburg tonight will host a public meeting on its Brownfield Assessment Program.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the Dobisky Visitors Center, 100 Riverside Ave.

City Planning and Development Director Andrea L. Smith is hoping for a good turnout for what she is certain is going to be a worthwhile meeting.

“This is a great opportunity for people to learn about brownfields and its effect on them,” she said.

The program has two grants totaling $320,000 the city received last fall from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The EPA is asking for property owners’ approval to do environmental site assessments on eligible sites that are contaminated with petroleum products or other hazardous substances.

The site assessment includes research of past use, soil borings and other tests to determine the extent of contamination.

The cost of each assessment will vary with the size of the property and the scope of the work.

The property owners will not have to contribute to the cost of investigation.

The program focuses on the city’s Waterfront Brownfield Opportunity Area.

That is a 330-acre section of waterfront property that includes at least 15 known brownfield sites with many more parcels within the zone believed to be contaminated.

Ms. Smith will be available from 4 to 5:30 p.m. today to assist anyone who is unable to attend the meeting.
