Junior attack Taylor Hughes, a Watertown native attending St. John Fisher, was selected as an Empire 8 Conference first-team all-star in women’s lacrosse.

Hughes leads the conference in points (82) and assists (32), is fifth in goals (50) and ranks second on the Cardinals in goals to Melissa Leonhard (66), who was selected as the Empire 8’s most valuable player.

Hughes also made the Empire 8 championship’s all-tournament team this past weekend as she generated 10 points, including seven goals in two games, leading St. John Fisher to its second straight conference title with an 11-8 victory over Ithaca on Sunday.

The Cardinals earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament and will travel to play at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in a first-round game at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

nMegan Belch, a freshman at Division II Tiffin College in Ohio, was named to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse first team as a defender. The 2012 Watertown High School graduate helped Tiffin (10-9, 6-2 conference) reach the GLIAC tournament championship game before suffering a season-ending 16-12 loss to Grand Valley State.
