Transfer articulation agreement finalized between SUNY Potsdam, NCCC

POTSDAM — SUNY Potsdam just made it easier for students to home in on their major.

A transfer articulation agreement between Potsdam and North Country Community College has been finalized in an effort to give a step-by-step process for students entering into college.

The agreement is an advising tool for faculty at NCCC to work with students who intend to transfer to Potsdam, said Susan R. Manfred, SUNY Potsdam director of academic transfer services.

“It provides students with the resources needed to select appropriate major courses during their enrollment at the community college,” Mrs. Manfred said. “This allows for seamless transferability and the opportunity to graduate from SUNY Potsdam with a baccalaureate degree in a timely manner.”

The agreement is a part of keeping with the State University of New York’s seamless transfer initiatives.

The campus-to-campus agreement details compliance under the SUNY general education policy. NCCC students who transfer to Potsdam with an associate degree, having completed 30 semester hours of general education, including seven out of 10 required courses, will be ready to start work on their major without having to take additional classes.

For the last 12 years, Potsdam has had a transfer website for students of two-year schools to help them find out what the courses they took would equate to at Potsdam, said Thomas W. Nesbitt, the school’s director of admissions.

“We have continued with that site, but over the years we’ve started to take a look at making more agreements official,” Mr. Nesbitt said. “We get to know these schools and these are our best transfer, feeder schools, so we know each other’s curriculum.”

While Potsdam is working on agreements with neighboring campuses, where most of its transfer students come from, NCCC is the first school to enter into the agreement.

The community college has campuses in Saranac Lake, Malone and Ticonderoga and is the only SUNY institution in the Adirondack Park.

SUNY Canton students have access to the transfer website for Potsdam; however, Mr. Nesbitt said, the “loose” articulation agreement with Canton needs to become more formalized.

“Just like with North County, we are trying to formalize things a little bit more with Canton,” Mr. Nesbitt said. “At present time, we have met with them on a couple of occasions to try to nail that down.”
