The Jefferson County Office for the Aging is celebrating May as Older Americans Month by recognizing two volunteers who have immersed themselves in the community.

Holly Armstrong, Carthage, and Betty Reff, Watertown, were nominated for the state Office for the Aging Senior Citizens Day recognition awards Tuesday in Albany, and although they didn’t take home an award, their work continues to be noted.

“I think it’s important to know how involved people are in the community,” said Louise Harackza, deputy director of the county Office for the Aging. “It doesn’t matter that you’re older; it’s about your involvement in the community.”

She said Mrs. Reff and Mrs. Armstrong are prime examples of that.

Mrs. Armstrong, an advisory council member for the county department since 2006, is involved with the North Country Council of Social Agencies, Tobacco Prevention Awareness and Cessation Coalition in Jefferson and Lewis counties, Alcohol and Substance Abuse Council of Jefferson County’s rapid response team and the Jefferson County Chapter of AARP.

Mrs. Reff holds officer positions on the county Office for the Aging’s advisory council, Brownville-Glen Park Senior Citizens BGs, Northpole Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and the county AARP chapter.

She works with the state civil service supervisor for the Watertown area, serves as a Jefferson County election inspector and belongs to the Watertown Elks Lodge.

She is a state notary public and a Eucharist minister and parishioner of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church.
