Body of man who died trying to save a drowning boy recovered from Black River

The body of Edward L. Whitfield III, 47, was recovered Wednesday morning from the Black River, according to City of Watertown police.

Shortly before 8 a.m., Bradley Sheehan, an employee of Northbrook Energy LLC, spotted a body in the river at the hydro racks in Glen Park.

Several agencies responded. Two members of the Jefferson County Special Tactics and Rescue Team entered the water and secured the body, which was brought to shore and positively identified as Mr. Whitfield.

Mr. Whitfield was reported missing after he apparently jumped into the river to try to save 5-year-old Zachary J. Finley from drowning after he slipped and fell into the water while the two were fishing April 27.

The boy’s body was recovered about an hour after the incident at the same location in Glen Park.

Mr. Whitfield’s body was transported from the scene by Cleveland Funeral Home and turned over to the Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s office.
