Volunteers sought for Caring for Colton Day activities

COLTON - A number of spring clean-up, fix-up and planting projects are underway in the town of Colton and more volunteers are needed at this time to help with specific projects. Community volunteers who have adopted community garden spots or community trails need some extra help with weeding, raking, planting and mulching as well as picking up debris and trash along trails, in parking lots and along roads.

So the town’s Tourism & Beautification Committee, chaired by Ruth McWilliams, is putting out a call for more volunteers to give their time and energy to help beautify the town at this time of year.

The town’s annual Caring for Colton Day will be held May 18. Volunteers will focus their time and energy on two town parks, one trail and a painting project.

Sally Thomas is leading planting efforts at Sunday Rock Park and Three Falls Park, Kirke Perry is coordinating trash pickup and other work along the John Stone Memorial Nature Trail, and Ruth McWilliams is coordinating a ‘neighbors-helping-neighbors’ painting project.

The work goes on before and after May 18. A month ago new banners were ordered for the light poles along Main Street in the hamlet of Colton. This week panels were installed at the Raquette River Blueway Corridor kiosk in the town’s new parking area at the corner of state Highway 56 and Main Street, where volunteers help maintain the landscaping and flowers.

Volunteers are now helping the town’s Department of Public Works with a new pergola and landscaping plan at the recently designated Three Falls Park in the hamlet of South Colton. After May 18, volunteers will focus their time and energy on other town parks and sites as well as the summer schedule of activities.

Anyone wishing to help with Caring for Colton Day on May 18 or related volunteer activities before or after May 18 should contact Ruth McWilliams (315-262-2450) or Scott Muller (315-244-9956).

Ruth is the town’s Tourism & Beautification coordinator, and Scott helps direct volunteer and fundraising activities of the Tourism & Beautification Committee.
