LOUDONVILLE - St. Lawrence University’s baseball team will play in an elimination game to start the day on Friday after sustaining a 8-0 loss to Rensselaer in the opening game of the 2013 Liberty League Baseball Championship being hosted by Union College.

The third seeded Engineers beat the Saints for the fifth time this season, blowing the game open with a seven-run eighth inning after Saint starter Joe Riley and RPI’s Mike Campisi batted through the first seven with RPI leading just 1-0 after an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth.

Campisi came out the winner for the second time in a matchup with Riley as RPI scored seven runs on seven hits and took advantage of two Saint errors in the bottom of the eighth. Campisi scattered six singles for the Saints, who had two runners on in the first, fifth, eighth and ninth, but could not plate a run.

The Saints will play Vassar in a 9 a.m. game on Saturday. Vassar lost its opening game to Union.

RPI scored its first run in the fourth as Jonny Rio singled and Shane Matthews followed with a single up the middle. An error on a fielder’s choice brought home the run.

Rio hit a two run triple and later scored on an outfield error to start the eighth inning uprising.

Riley pitched into the eighth and gave up seven runs, five earned. He walked one and struck out six. Campisi pitched a complete game shutout for the Engineers with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Saints will take a 20-16 record into Friday’s elimination game.
