OBPA to smokers: 100 feet to light up

If you want to smoke outside the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority building at Bridge Plaza, do your lighting up away from the front steps.

Away by 100 feet, in fact.

The authority recently voted unanimously to amend a November 2010 state Public Health Law-backed smoke-free workplace policy that prohibits smoking from within 25 feet of the entrance to all OBPA buildings to within 100 feet.

For Bridge Plaza proximity purposes, that means lighting up will now have to be done at edge of the building’s front parking lot.

“We were reviewing the policy and stated we could change the distance and the board suggested that we didn’t like people smoking in front of our entrances, having cigarette butts, smoke near the building,” said Samuel J. LaMacchia, the board’s chairman.

Vice Chairman Frederick J. Carter Sr. advocates a total ban on smoking on authority property.

“That’s the most important part,” he said. “No smoking doesn’t bother me at all.”

Kelly A. Lustyik, who works on the building’s second floor at radio station WNCQ 102.9, had no qualms earlier in the week about taking her cigarette from the front steps to the edge of the parking lot.

“It doesn’t bother me,” she said.

All authority buildings and vehicles are already smoke-free zones.
