POTSDAM — A section of roof under construction at Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s Lawrence Avenue medical complex collapsed Sunday, presumably from high winds.

The roof section consisted of wooden trusses that buckled and caved.

Neither hospital officials nor the contractor who had been working on the building were available to comment. Village police said they had no report of other damage to the building.

Gusts caused downed trees and power lines Sunday, St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies reported, but they had no reports of widespread damage to structures.

The construction at the Lawrence Avenue medical center is meant to double the size of the campus.

Hospital officials proposed a 20,000-square-foot addition last fall to the building that formerly housed St. Mary’s School. They anticipate it will provide space for more than 50 employees, including approximately 10 physicians.

The addition is meant to help recruit primary care doctors to CPH. Hospital officials renovated and opened the Lawrence Avenue building in 2010 and expect the addition to cost about $5 million.
