PHILADELPHIA — Five candidates are vying for two seats on the Indian River Central School District Board of Education.

The budget vote and board election will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 21 in the district office board room.

John A. Voetsch is running for re-election.

Age: 59

Occupation: Retired Army, Fort Drum Medical Activity Human Resources Division management and program analyst.

Academics: Bachelor’s degree in physical education from Norwich University, 1979; master’s degree in health care administration from Baylor University, 1986.

Family: He is married to Jill V. and has two children: Beth, 29, and R.J., 25.

Previous board experience: A five-year term on the board. He is also the Evans Mills Fire Department’s fire commissioner.

“I have been honored to serve on the Indian River Central School District board for the past five years,” he wrote in an email message. “However, there is still work to do with potentially increasing student population and decreasing funding. I would very much like to be re-elected so the other members of this strong school board and I can continue to tackle these challenges.”

Shelly Eggleston, Theresa, is running for Mr. Voetsch’s seat.

Age: 44

Occupation: Nurse at Fort Drum traumatic brain injury clinic

Academics: Nursing license from Jefferson-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services; Jefferson Community College Leadership Program, 1987.

Family: She is married to Dale R. and has three children: Megan L., 25, Kristen A., 18, and Danica H., 5.

Previous board experience: none

“I’m really concerned with the mandates and the way that education is being dictated,” Mrs. Eggleston said. “Education is being out of our hands. Kids are being tested to death at a young age. I feel my only way to help is to be a voice on the board.”

She has been on the Parent-Teacher Organization for Theresa Primary School and Indian River Middle School and has volunteered for school activities. She also volunteers as a cheerleading coach.

Family: Married to Helyn and has a daughter, Emily A., 16.

Previous board experience: none

“I don’t want to go in there and change the world because it’s already a great school,” he said. “I want to help build on what’s there. Obviously, I’m still going to school myself, so the importance of education is at the top of my list.”

Tracy M. Tanner, Philadelphia, is running for Thomas L. Lapp’s seat.

Age: 31

Occupation: Bodman Memorial Library director

Academics: Indian River High School, 2000; real estate license from Century 21.
