WINTHROP — A 42-year-old man drowned Sunday afternoon when he was searching for his dog in a swampy area behind the Key Bank, Route 11C.

State police said the body of Jarred S. Donalis was located by a volunteer in approximately 3 feet of water on the edge of a pond shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday.

Bureau of Criminal Investigation Senior Investigator Judith M. Trimboli, Massena, said state police received a missing person call from Mr. Donalis’s mother at about 1 p.m. Sunday reporting her son had wandered off looking for his dog and had not returned home. Mr. Donalis had an advanced medical condition that affected his mobility, she said.

Ms. Trimboli said state police and volunteers launched a search and found his body approximately a quarter of a mile from his residence. “There was no sign of foul play, and the cause of death was ruled to be an accidental drowning,” she said.
